Hopes of Road Edge

Girlan Nusantara is a home of some street musicians in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Girlan is the acronym of Pinggir Jalan (or Road Edge in English). Located in main street of Yogyakarta-Solo, Girlan accommodate hundreds of street musicians, ex recidivist, ex prostitute and drugs addict. Supriyono (58 years old) is the person behind all of this. He built Girlan and taking care of the kids since end of 80s. Several activities has been held everyday, for instance afternoon class and reading holy qur’an, soft skills workshops and religious activities and celebration.

November 11^th 2011 is a big day for Girlan people. 11 couples of them consists of street musicians, ex prostitute and disable people, celebrate their massal wedding. Some of them are already married and got some kids before. Many of them are growing up in Girlan and still survive their life in the road.

Supriyono (Om Yon), 55 years old, the leader of Girlan Nusantara Foundation. More than 30 years survive in Prambanan Market. Besides being a fruit seller, he is also the head of security who protects  plenty of seller

Bagong (24 years old, one of Girlan people. He is an ex recidivist and drugs addict who till now on, become a street musician in bus Yogyakarta-Solo

Odong-odong, a toy which typically for the kids. Almost everyday, the owner pick up the kids and go around village with costs 200 rupiahs

Every afternoon, kids (3-15 years old) are studying and reading qur’an lead by teacher. Approximately 40 kids present in a small room 6x4 meter which is also used to sleep and pray as a little mosque. While it is raining, rain drops through small rifts in the roof

Wagiman (55 years old) and his wife, was one of the couple in massal wedding which is held by Girlan Nusantara. He is a Girlan People who drives a pedicab for living
